Rated 10/10

Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license -- for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.
But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world -- and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.
MY REVIEW
Awesome book, there wasn't one boring part in the entire book. This is the first book in the Uglies series and the fouth book I have read by Scott Westerfeld,he is an amazing author. The story teaches you there is more than just being pretty, and we should look past looks. Fifteen year old Tally lives in a future where looks are valued above everything else and normal is ugly. At the age of 16 uglies(people who looks the way they are born) are given a sugery that changes them into extremely beautiul people, where they get to live the fun life not worrying about anything and partying all the time. Not long before Tally's 16th birthday she meets Shay and they quickly become friends. Shay shows Tally the world outside the city, they both have great times together pulling pranks while Tally counts down the days until she can be a pretty. Then one night Shay comes to Tally asking her to run away with her to a secret settlement(the Smoke) full of uglies(Smokies) who don't want to be pretties and live out in the middle of nowhere. Tally refuses to go with Shay, and on the day she is supposed to be turned pretty she is told that unless she can help lead the Specials(a pretty police with super human abilities) to the Smokies she will never be turned into a pretty and have to live her life out as an ugly. She is bugged using a necklace and makes her way to the Smoke, where she tells them a bunch of lies. Once there for awhile Tally realizes she likes their way of life and falls for David(the son of the couple who started Smoke). She soon learns the secret that being turned pretty doesn't just change your looks but your brain and thinking as well.
